Drawings & Paintings

I have just finished updating and rearranging my website, and I have also added pictures of the new painting and drawing that I’ve been working on this past month.

Here are the previews below:

I’m looking forward to exploring this drawing in a new painting.  This drawing was both prepatory and also a finished piece on its own.  I used to draw and sketch a lot with pencils, ink and oil pastels but since I started oil painting, I have been drifting away from doing finished drawings.  I sometimes forget the importance of drawing, so I’m hoping to do some more sketches.  I’ve also newly added a Sketchbook & Drawings section to my website for displaying this side of my practice which is usually hidden away in my sketchbooks.

More on the way

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog, but I’ve been busy in the studio working on two different pieces…one is a large painting and the other is a drawing.  More will be posted in the upcoming days as I update my website.

In the meantime, here is a sneak peek of the drawing…

Sneak Peek!

I haven’t updated my blog in a while, as I have been busy in the studio working on a few different projects, as well as starting some new work (there are some sneak peeks in this post)…!

I’m still developing my ideas, so no pictures of my paintings just yet, but I thought it would be fun to post some photos instead of writing, as I’ve been taking lots of photos around town, by my apartment and at the studio.  So here is a short photo diary of the last couple of weeks:

Many many layers

Here is the final peek at the self-portrait I have just finished, with the biggest clue as to what is in this painting.

Sept. 29, 2009 - Painted colours

Sept. 29, 2009 - Painted colours

Sept. 29, 2009 - Colours painted

Sept. 29, 2009 - Colours painted

You’ll have to wait until the exhibition opens to actually see the portrait, and I will also put up a video then that will show the different layers that went into creating this painting.

I like to take photos of my works while they are still in progress.  It’s interesting to look back at them afterwards and see how the image has developed.  Sometimes I know what the image will be from the moment I start, with the sketch all planned out, and other times, the work takes on a life of its own.  For example, The Return Home, which is currently showing in Kingston, Ontario, was painted section by section, foreground first, then background.  I had an image in my head of how I wanted to place the double figures, but I was not yet sure what I wanted to do with the background.  It wasn’t until I had almost finished painting the figures that I finally realized there was a whole story to be told through the background elements.  So here is an image of the painting without the background painted in yet.  It’s amazing how different it looks!

I plan on posting more “in progress” photos of both older and current works on here in the future.  Let me know what you think…does it add to your interpretation/appreciation of an image if you know how it came to be?

Finishing touches

I’m just putting the final touches on the last painting for my exhibition The Way We Were.  The painting is a small self-portrait that is a bit different from the other works in the show, but at the same time, it isn’t.  Cryptic, I know…  You’ll have to wait until the show opens to see what I mean.

The latest body of work has been a bit of a departure from my usual style but the self-portrait brings my continuing theme of miniature portraiture back into play.  The process of painting myself in my studio, the space where I have created the work for the show, has been the perfect way to cap off this body of work and makes a nod to some classic portrait paintings that have influenced me since my art history days; namely Las Meninas (1656) by Diego Velázquez and The Arnolfini Portrait (1434) by Jan van Eyck.

My latest self-portrait has similarities to both paintings.  As a bit of a teaser to the show, I will be updating the blog with some sneak peek images, details from the final painting, including dates that these sections were painted.  See if you can try to slowly piece together the image.
