The great thing about miniatures is that their size makes it easy to transport, and I was able to work from home today. The light isn’t as good in my living room as in my studio, but I managed to get some work done on my two little paintings. The sun is starting to pour in now, and it’s turned out to be a lovely afternoon!

I’m starting to work on the two paintings side by side now, as I painted more detail in the background today. I was able to set up on my kitchen table and work without making too much of a mess… I usually work with my paintings straight on the wall, as I like to work on a completely flat surface and I find working with easels always creates a bit of an angle which affects the perspective of the finished piece, but I had to use a table easel today, which needed some getting used to.

I started with the detail in the background, with the North Shore mountains and the soft ocean waves:
The colours of the sea, sky and mountains and my small brush, on my palette:
And as I need to let this layer dry more before I can continue on the background, I decided to add another layer to my self-portrait’s clothing.
So I have a few more days’ work to do on these paintings. I think the main beneficiary of my working from home today was my dog, as I was dog-sitting today and I think he liked his little nap in the sun on my sofa.
And after a few hours of painting the sea and oceans, I went to see the real thing and brought him down to Kitsilano Beach for a walk in the sunshine!
