My piece “Apollo’s Revenge” is finished and now hanging in the Concourse Gallery at Emily Carr University for the next few days.\u00a0 There are a total of 50 different works hanging from the ceiling of the gallery, all made with the same kits made up of paper, foam and twigs.<\/p>\n

I think I put the green paper to good use…I noticed only one other person had green paper in their kit.\u00a0 Here’s a little blurb about what the piece was about, which I think will be included in the exhibition’s online catalogue:<\/p>\n

This work is related to an oil painting I made earlier this year titled \u201cDaphne\u2019s Metamorphosis\u201d, which was based on the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo.\u00a0 In the painting, Daphne is transforming into a laurel tree, with branches sprouting from her palms, in order to escape Apollo\u2019s unwelcome advances.\u00a0 Because I wanted to tie this sculptural work into my current painting series, \u201cOf Myth and Men\u201d, I decided to create Daphne\u2019s hands.\u00a0 With this piece, however, there is a more macabre suggestion to the conclusion of the story, but it is made light of with the materials and techniques used in its creation, usually associated with children and school projects.\u00a0 Similar to how traditional fairy tales are quite dark and intended for adults and children alike, despite being associated mainly with children, this piece, while slightly na\u00efve and lighthearted on the surface, has a sinister story behind it.<\/p>\n

As much fun as I had creating this piece and working on something a bit more sculptural, I’m also really looking forward to getting back to my painting, since I took the week off to work on “Apollo’s Revenge”.\u00a0 This project was a good little challenge for me, to get some of those other parts of my creative brain working.\u00a0 Now back to painting…!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
