There’s no Fridays & Friends this month, as I’m still going full steam ahead with my “pretty boys kill me” campaign.<\/p>\n

I’m really enjoying working on these small drawing studies for my pretty boys kill me series right now. I find there is such a different quality to my mark making when I work small compared to the larger poster-sized drawings. I’ve encountered the same thing with my paintings as well – oftentimes preferring my miniatures to my larger work. I think there is a certain amount of intimacy involved with working small. And with these studies, I find my hand and line work freer in my execution of the drawings. Perhaps because I don’t think of them as being too precious. But they kind of are!<\/p>\n

My desktop these days – all in the name of research<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I’ve been working from photos found on the internet of male fashion models. I didn’t realize there were so many Tumblr blogs dedicated to individual models with fan followings. This has made my research so much easier. The boys I’m searching for have a certain aesthetic to them, but with my actual drawings, I’m not trying to replicate their looks but mainly borrowing from and referencing their poses, the lighting\/shadows and skin tones. I think this is perhaps why the faces in the large drawing continually change. Working with portraiture, I’ve always been interested in how if there is the slightest change in an element of the face, if something is just a little bit smaller or bigger, more to the left or right, it no longer looks like the person and just someone that resembles the subject of the portrait.<\/p>\n

This latest drawing I finished late last night – and I stopped every 10 minutes to take a scan of the drawing in progress. \u00a0I’ve put those images together to make a short time lapse video that shows 100 minutes of work condensed into about 30 seconds. I actually recommend watching the video on Vimeo<\/a><\/span><\/strong> instead of streaming it on my website, as you can view the video\/drawing at a larger size and in HD, so you can see more of the details in the drawing.<\/p>\n
