This series is a re-imagining of my past crushes and boyfriends. Using memories from childhood to adulthood, I described this cast of characters to an artificial intelligence. It then generated its own visual interpretations from its anonymous dataset.
Frankenstein sought to create life from inanimate parts; similarly, I am breathing new life into these digital compositions through the act of drawing. My hand-drawn lines add softness and an emotional depth to the faces, layering the images with my own desires and nostalgia. The act of drawing becomes a way of saving these figures from the homogenizing effects of AI, infusing them with the nuances of memory, the tenderness of youth, and the wistfulness of looking back.
In Order of Appearance is a playful glimpse into my personal history. The drawings capture the imperfect ways we remember those who once held a place in our lives, as our recollections gradually erode with age.
