Lacking a horizon

Walking over the sand dunes to the beach

Here at Ox-Bow, we’re lucky that we have canoes we can take out on the lagoon anytime we like. The weather has been really beautiful here the past few days, and a few of us decided to take the canoes out to the sand dunes at Lake Michigan. We had been hearing digital fog horns all day but didn’t realize until we got over the sand dunes that the lake was covered in fog.

No horizon line…

The visual effect was really kind of startling…I don’t know that it shows up very well in the photos below, but basically there was no horizon as the sky seemed to melt into the lake. And this lake was huge; I’ve never experienced a lake like this before. I suppose that is why it is one of the Great Lakes.  It looks an ocean that goes on forever.

And let me tell you, the water was colder than anything I’ve ever been in before. I thought the Pacific Ocean was cold. That’s nothing compared to this, as I couldn’t feel my legs after a few seconds in the water and then it was actually painfully cold. So I jumped in, all the way, and then ran out to thaw on the hot sand. All in all, a nice afternoon.
