Thunder & lightning

Rolling clouds & the colour red

It’s that time again…a new painting is in the works.

The lion's face in progress

I realized that many of the skyscapes in my Of Myth and Men series capture the moment before a storm – before the lightning crashes and the thunder roars. But then maybe not, on second thought. Sometimes they seem to represent the calm before the storm, and other times it seems like the storm has passed as the sun breaks through the clouds again. I suppose it is a bit like the glass is half empty or half full expression. Am I feeling optimistic or pessimistic while on that particular day of painting?

His hand

When I go into a painting, I don’t necessarily think about whether the sky depicts the moments before or after a storm, and when I look at the painting afterward, this changes for me too, depending on my mood when viewing it. I like to keep the narrative open in this series, so it’s up to the viewer to decide whether the storm has come or passed. Or perhaps there wasn’t and won’t be a storm at all, and it was just cloudy that day….
